60 Years of Cultural Dynamics

Opened in March 1962, the Hong Kong City Hall provides diverse cultural services to the members of the public and an arena for artists and arts groups from different disciplines to showcase their talents. Continuous development was made over the past 60 years to meet public needs in cultural performances, art exhibitions and reading. Sprouting from the Hong Kong City Hall, the three major divisions under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) — Performing Arts, Heritage and Museums, and Library and Development now operate 16 distinctive performing arts venues in the city, boasting the revamped Hong Kong Museum of Art (HKMoA) and the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) network with 70 static and 12 mobile libraries premises. This year, the LCSD is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Hong Kong City Hall with the theme of "60 Years of Cultural Dynamics" to capture public attention to this cradle of culture in our city.

In celebration of Hong Kong City Hall’s diamond jubilee, the LCSD commissioned the artist duo Hung Lam and Eddy Yu to design a lively and dynamic logo for the event. Three "60" figures in different fonts and shapes are used to signify the same origin of the Hong Kong City Hall, HKMoA and HKPL. The design accentuates the fact that they have been working side by side for the promotion of culture for six decades, and will continue to do so with the same vitality in the years to come.

This "606060" logo is currently being displayed on the façades of the High Block of the Hong Kong City Hall and HKMoA on either side of Victoria Harbour.

Unlike city halls or town halls elsewhere in the world, which are generally occupied by the municipal offices, Hong Kong’s City Hall has been an office for artists and a stage for them to showcase their talents and shine. Someone used to say that Hong Kong, with its great merchant houses, thriving industries, and life dependency on trade, was too busy to care for the aesthetic values of life. For 60 years, City Hall has accompanied Hong Kong people to watch the sunrise and sunset. Since its opening, how many artists have performed on its stage? Who are the superstars? Who are the first-timers? How many audiences have attended the performances? How many readers have used the Library? How many visitors have watched the exhibition in the Museum? How many lovers have exchanged their vows at the Marriage Registry?

As the late Mr Chow Fan-fu said in his book Where Modern Hong Kong Began: The City Hall and Its 50-Year Story, the answers themselves to these questions are likewise no longer critical. As the City Hall has witnessed and been an integral part of Hong Kong's transformation into an international cultural metropolis. With the change of time and circumstances, Hong Kong has transformed from a trading-based society to a knowledge-based society. In the future, the City Hall will continue to give impetus to Hong Kong as a vibrant cultural metropolis, and to seek progress, innovation and creativity in building Hong Kong as a creative city of the 21st century.

Celebrating the Uncelebrated

In 1962, the Hong Kong Museum of Art (then known as the "City Hall Art Gallery & Museum") was founded with its first home at the City Hall. It later relocated to its current site in Tsim Sha Tsui in 1991, and was temporarily closed in 2015 for a major renovation and expansion, that culminated in its reopening with a fresh new look in late 2019. In the past six decades, the museum has never wavered from its mission to preserve and pass on the cultural legacies of art, by organising large blockbuster exhibitions and displaying the museum's precious collections, while being gifted with important works by generous donors. Each of these milestones were the talk of the town. As we looked back on the years gone by, we realised that many stories had lain obscured from public consciousness. These unknown yet colourful anecdotes document the growth of the museum, and even the city — from its humble origins as an economic backwater to its international standing today as one of the most developed cities in the world. It's a legendary success story, filled with tales of fascination and wonder.

Let us take a step back, and celebrating the uncelebrated — stories that are quintessentially, uniquely Hong Kong!
